Abstract: The Northeast states have relatively high levels of population and infrastructure development, and were for an extended period the industrial hub of the nation. The natural resources of the region facilitated the extraction of sand and gravel and wood for construction, coal and wood for energy, and ores from which metals were processed. This activity resulted in, and is still generating, areas of highly distributed land or critical areas.
