Abstract: The North Carolina Department of Transportation Wildflower Program began in 1985 with encouragement from individuals and garden clubs. Wildflowers create dazzling displays of color from spring through fall for the stat’s travelers, providing that roadsides can be beautiful as well as functional. While some of the most popular wildflowers used by NCDOT are not native to North Carolina, there are several lovely natives that contribute handsomely to the program.
