Abstract: Vegetational development of big bluestem (Andropogon geraradi Vitman) and indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash) was studied during 19 consecutive months. All big bluestem tillers arose extravaginally (penetrated the sheath of the subtending leaf) during late April and early May. Each tiller living only during one growing season.
